有种声音让你陷到很深很深,然后又突然让你飘到最上面,重重地被甩在黑夜的角落;有种声音让暴风雨变得唯美有格调;有种声音把阴郁的傍晚天空变得空旷有灵性;有种声音让黑夜变成直白。low有意在鼓点之间留出空间让人声穿过,过滤,剩下贝斯干净的回音在空间回荡。low的音乐黑色透明。当酒神狄俄尼索斯遇上天使,人们应该纵酒狂欢后的暧昧神智不清还是变得干净纯粹?
low的音乐比缓慢更缓慢,比迅猛更迅猛,
这是一直低调的乐队。low成立于1993年的Duluth,由成员Alan Sparhawk (吉他,VOCAL,键盘)Mimi Parker (VOCAL,鼓)Zak Sally (贝司,键盘)组成,Alan and Mimi是虔诚的基督徒,虽然他们否认自己是 Christian rock band,但是在他们的乐队中我们可以感受到信仰在音乐中留下的痕迹。他们的音乐简单到不能再简单,但却创造出巨大的魔力。作为90年代slowcore 运动的开启者,low的辨识度很高,只要你听过他们的音乐就很容易区别其他的乐队。无论在间隔的鼓点和冷静的贝司营造出的背景氛围还是mini parker,Sparhawk不动声色的唱腔,他们的音乐是超然在外的体验,仿佛无论有没有听众,他们都在某个昏暗的舞台一角自己为自己制造着某种声响。很少有乐队可以在自己设定的音乐风格框架中继续走很远,但是low做到了,这点和Jesus and Mary Chain一样,十年中并没有改变太多自己的风格,但是仍然创作出了伟大的歌曲。Zak告诉我们low的音乐理念是用最简单的乐器进行创造,决不浪费,除此之外一切都是玩笑。如此继续下去,没有人会知道他们的最终的音乐会是怎样,还可以简约到什么程度。和原来我对LOW的猜想不一样的是,乐队缓慢的风格在刚开始成型时是处于好奇和反叛,三个知趣相投的年轻人走到一起,尝试着做一些与众不同的音乐,目的只是想看看可以走多远,这种做法似乎与乐队的音乐风格格格不入。和 Sonic Youth,Yo La Tengo一样,贝司成了三支乐队确立自己风格的致命武器。
至今为止,LOW已经推出了10张专集,12张EP,2005年的1月25号,乐队将推出〈The Great Destroyer>,做为在Sub Pop推出的debut.如此看来,Low也想在原有的风格上寻求变化。反差很大的是,low的成员自己喜欢的乐队却是Sabbath, Swans, Birthday Party, Rage Against the Machine, Jesus Lizard,或许这就是为什么在low的音乐中总是在冷静中蕴藏着某种一触即发。
low是适合在傍晚的阴天,或者是暴风雨前的一刻聆听的,但决不是在晚上,
类似的slowcore,sadcore乐队如今有很多,但没有谁的音乐能够做得像low一般简约唯美低调.很多人用冰冷晦涩来形容low的声音,其实他们更多的是声音的空间感与疏离感。
low 的配乐一直做的很棒,虽然简单地不能再简单,贝司和鼓配合地恰倒好处,人声反而成了点缀,常常会特地为了鼓点或者贝司去听他们的歌,久而久之养成了听歌必先听配乐的习惯,唱什么,怎么唱反而变的不重要。氛围与格调就这样出来了,一切是那么自然。low的音乐一直很有自己的格调。把一样东西做到极至了自然就会形成格调,而low就是一直以来都在执者着自己的风格的。数不清的歌手乐队到了圣诞节总要推出那么一张应景的专集。而low决不马虎,那张1999年发行的专集<CHRISTMAS>做出来的感觉就是low原味的,黑色透明的圣诞夜,黑色透明的梦想。< I Could Live In Hope>是乐队在1994年推出的首张专集。我最喜欢的是他们2001年的< things we lost in the fire>,是low最有情节的一张专集,主唱Mimi parker与alan合上器乐的处理使整张专集听来很彻底。彻底是因为这是LOW的音乐在爆发前酝酿地最彻底的专集。然而,当Alan Sparhawk 第一次听到这张专集的时候,他简直受不了,甚至感到厌恶。音乐出来的样子和他原来对于新专集的想象大相径庭,当Alan Sparhawk 在自己的机器里播放 Things We Lost in the Fire 的时候,他发现这跟原本的想象没有一点相同的地方,他几乎受到毁灭性的打击。他甚至想去其他地方重新录制专集,过了一个星期,他才渐渐地喜欢上了这张专集,也许Alan Sparhawk还不喜欢专集中比以往要大的多的声响。后来ALAN解释说,一切都是自然而然的,我从来没有说过“让我们做一张快的专集把,我们可以不只是一个缓慢的安静的乐队。”我很满意我们只是一个缓慢安静的乐队,我知道有很多乐队正在尝试改变,但最终都失败了,我很满意乐队从一开始就为自己划定的风格。我们过去常常争论这首歌是不是符合LOW的风格,这首歌该如何演绎,而现在我们会争论,这首歌会如何发展?然后我们会尽力让它顺着自己自然地发展下去。这就是Things We Lost in the Fire变成现在这个面目的原因。一切都是自然而然的,真实的。“We're still the slow,quiet,depressing band"如果以前的专集是死寂的冬日,那么Things We Lost in the Fire就是初春的路边草地。安静,充满生命。可以说,在 Things We Lost in the Fire之后,Low变的更真实了。之后,乐队推出了<Trust>, Alan Sparhawk 的贝司开的更响了,low在一座房子里终于找到了合适的屋子,然后他们舒舒服服地躺下来休息。你可以在听LOW的时候睡着,但是你永远不知道什么时候会被他们弄醒,也永远不确定什么时候光线会从窗帘猛地射进屋子。音乐中逐渐开始呈现不确定性,就是这样的,真实就是如此不确定的。没有办法预测。
low 也从来不会在音乐里作假,该什么就是什么。mimi一阵低迷的轻声吟唱后便是敏若游丝,一触即发, low最精彩的地方就在与此,轻与重,升与降,浅与深,升华与坠入谷地,就在转变的一瞬间,突然联想到2004双年展上los angeles的 Bill viola的影象装置,跳入水中的男子渐渐浮出水面,没人知道升与降的界限在哪里,就这样自然地来了,带着神化的符号。
“他们凝望仁慈上帝的窗户。凝望仁慈上帝窗户的人是不会厌倦的;他幸福。”因此low 是幸福的,听low的人也是幸福的。他们的声音是来自天上的。
low 的音乐是简约的,歌词是直白短小的,但就是这么耐听,也许他们的音乐是要用心来聆听的,用感觉来思考的。任何过于理性的语言都不适合描绘low。他们的音乐是和技术没有过多联系的,即使永远的架子鼓,永远的简单贝司在low手边总能得到不一样的但同样简约的音乐。
也许没有人比较过这样三只乐队,low是被神化了的来自天上的,mojave 3是从乡间走来的朴素独立民谣,Miranda Sex Garden则是来自地狱之火的声嘶力竭的呐喊,拍部关于音乐的人鬼神三部曲一定很有意思。

Low is an American indie rock group from Duluth, Minnesota. The group was formed in 1993, by Alan Sparhawk (guitar and vocals), Mimi Parker (drums and vocals) and original bassist John Nichols (bass guitar). Zak Sally replaced Nichols after Low's first album and tour. In 2005, Sally quit the band; Matt Livingston replaced him shortly thereafter, creating the current lineup of Sparhawk, Parker and Livingston.
Their music is commonly described as "slowcore," a subgenre characterised by slow tempos and minimalist arrangements. They are one of the earlier bands to adopt and popularize the style, making them considerable contributors to the slowcore movement. (It is worth noting that the band dislike this tag. In an interview Alan Sparhawk says of descriptions of their music: "What's the cheesiest? Slow-core. I hate that word. The most appropriate is anything that uses the word minimal in it, but I don't think anybody's made one up for that." In another interview, Sparhawk claimed that a friend of his coined the term: "this friend of ours in a record store was always joking around...and he said, 'I got it! You should call it "slowcore"!'...It was a total joke, and I think I mentioned it at one of our interviews."[1] ) Parker and Sparhawk's striking vocal harmonies represent perhaps the group's most distinctive element; critic Denise Sullivan writes that their shared vocals are "as chilling as anything Gram and Emmylou ever conspired on -- though that's not to say it's country-tinged, just straight from the heart."
